Knology Sports Scholars
This is a partnership with Pinellas County Schools’ high school television production departments, WPDS-TV14, the Pinellas Education Foundation and the Knology cable system.
The concept of this project is to recruit Pinellas County high school television production students to produce a television package on student athletes who are academic scholars, active in community or school service projects and reflect the values of good citizenship. In addition, this student athlete should have a defined career goal. These stories should be done in a typical news feature format. Additional story telling tips and samples will be posted to this website soon, so please check back often.
The television packages can be done by a single student or team of students and must be completed within six weeks from acceptance of the story concept contract. Exceptions to this deadline will be made due to school testing schedules. The story concept contract contains a short outline of the topic, why it would make a compelling TV story, an approval from the television production teacher and commitment from the student(s) to complete the package by the assigned deadline. All story concepts must have final approval from Dave Cook at WPDS-TV14 before they are eligible to be apart of this project. Once the television packages have been produced, they are to be submitted to WPDS-TV14 on a DVD for approval and then uploaded to the Knology Cup sports website. Only approved packages will be used on the website and WPDS-TV14 sports special program that will air during the summer.
Every high school television production department represented in this project that has at least two packages submitted and approved will earn a $1,000 grant from Knology. In addition, each participating television production teacher/advisor will nominate one student who has been most involved in this project to be a finalist for a $2,000 scholarship that will be awarded in May as the Knology Cup Sports Correspondent of the Year. A complete list of criteria for this scholarship award will be sent to television production teachers/advisors in January.
